Folkestone and Dover Water is joining up with other companies to help stop the decline of water voles.
The local organisation is sponsoring a garden called Ratty’s Refuge at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show in a bid to highlight the ways habitats can be created as refuge for the furry creatures.
It is hoped those visiting the exhibition will take away tips to help with the revival of vole numbers, which dropped from seven million in 1990 to one million in 1998.
This has led to a special protection law being put on them.
David Walton, Managing Director of Folkestone and Dover Water, said: “We are looking not only to minimise environmental impacts but also, whenever possible, to enhance the environment.
“So we are delighted to be able to sponsor the Chelsea garden which shows how easy it is to help wildlife in our own gardens.”
Ratty’s Refuge, designed by Ann Robinson and Angela Potter of English Eden, shows how anyone within 1km of a river can create an environment for water voles.
The garden, sponsored by the River and Rowing Museum as well as the water company, marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of the Wind in the Willows where Ratty the water vole was created.
