Gritting teams across the county will be working today and overnight in a bid to clear the key roads as workers look to make their journey into work on Monday - just 24 hours after up to six inches of snow fell in parts of the county.

Kent County Council and Medway Council say they are doing every possible to try and clear key routes in order to keep disruption to a minimum.

However, plunging temperatures over night could cause road chaos and drivers are being urged to leave extra time for their journeys and take extra care when they venture out tomorrow.

KCC says more than 60 salting lorries are working round the clock to keep the county moving during the weekend’s big freeze.

Extra highways crews were drafted in, so salting lorries fitted with snow ploughs could be driven non-stop throughout the night to make sure key routes were kept clear of snow and ice.

The lorries spread around 1,000 tonnes of salt on Kent’s most important routes. All major roads in the county are open and passable with care.

In addition, the county council has fully stocked 2,000 salt bins across Kent, and provided more than 100 one-tonne salt bags to parishes, to help local communities beat freezing road conditions.

In Medway, the council there says all main A roads were treated four times last night as the snow fell, even though the dropping temperature were causing the snow to freeze.

Gritters had to double up to plough and grit together during the night and consequently all main A roads in Medway are running well. Gritters are continuing their work today (Sunday) on primary and secondary roads.

In addition, council contractors have been hand salting pavements in town centres since early morning and brought in additional teams to deal with main car parks.
